About this calculator
Gravel for paths, driveways, patios and drainage, as cubic yards and tonnes, with weed fabric under it.
How it’s calculated
Volume = area × depth. Weight = volume × density (about 1.5–1.7 tonnes per m³, or 1.2–1.3 tonnes per cu yd, for most gravel).
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Area shape
- Rectangle
- Length
- 20 ft
- Width
- 10 ft
- Depth
- 3 in
- Material
- ¾" clear stone
- Extra for settling / compaction
- 5%
the result is:
- Volume
- 1.94 cu yd
- Area
- 200 sq ft
- Approx. weight
- 2.45 t
- 0.5 cu ft (50 lb) bags
- 105 bags
Tips from the trade
- 2–3" for paths; driveways need 8–12" of compacted Granular A under 2–3" of top stone.
- Edging stops gravel creeping into lawns and beds.
- Suppliers sell by weight, so always check the weight figure.
Common questions
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
About 1.2–1.3 tonnes (2,600–2,900 lb), depending on the stone and how wet it is. A cubic metre weighs about 1.5–1.7 tonnes.
How much area does a tonne of gravel cover?
About 120–130 sq ft at 2" deep, or 80–85 sq ft at 3".
