About this calculator
How much mulch or bark you need for beds and borders, in cubic yards for bulk delivery and 2 or 3 cu ft bags.
How it’s calculated
Volume = area × depth. 1 cu yd = 27 cu ft = 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft.
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Area shape
- Rectangle
- Length
- 20 ft
- Width
- 10 ft
- Depth
- 3 in
- Material
- Shredded hardwood mulch
- Extra allowance
- 0%
the result is:

- 1.85 cu yd
- Area
- 200 sq ft
- Approx. weight
- 1,249 lb
- 2 cu ft bags
- 25 bags
- 3 cu ft bags
- 17 bags
Tips from the trade

- Keep mulch a hand’s width clear of trunks and stems.
- Bulk works out cheaper than bags above about 2 cu yd.
