About this calculator
How long an access ramp must be for a given rise and slope, and how many landings it needs.
How it’s calculated
Run = rise × slope ratio. AS 1428.1: ramps no steeper than 1:14, with landings at least every 9 m of length (every 15 m at 1:20). A step ramp can be 1:10 for up to 190 mm of rise. Landings here are 1.2 m long.
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Total rise
- 450 mm
- Slope
- 1:14 (ramp maximum)
the result is:
- Ramp length (slope)
- 6.3 m
- Landings
- 1 (incl. top)
- Overall length with landings
- 7.5 m
- Angle
- 4.09°
Tips from the trade
- A gentler slope than the maximum is much easier for users.
- Handrails are required on both sides of most ramps.
