About this calculator
Add GST or HST to a price, or work out the tax inside a tax-included total.
How it’s calculated
Gross = net × (1 + rate). Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). At 13% HST, the tax inside a tax-included total is the total × 13 ÷ 113, not 13% of the total.
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Amount
- $1000
- GST/HST rate %
- 13%
- Amount is
- Before tax
the result is:
- Total with tax
- $1,130.00
- Net
- $1,000.00
- GST/HST
- $130.00
- Gross
- $1,130.00
Tips from the trade
- The rate depends on the province: 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% HST in Nova Scotia and 15% in the other Atlantic provinces, plus 6% PST on construction contracts in Saskatchewan and QST in Quebec. In BC and Manitoba, contractors usually pay PST on their materials instead of adding it to the bill.
Common questions
How do I work out the HST in a price?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario, $1,130 ÷ 1.13 = $1,000 before tax, so the total includes $130 of HST.
Results are estimates for planning and pricing. Check quantities against your drawings, the manufacturer’s data and the building code adopted in your province before ordering.
